With advances in DNA technology and greater awareness from the general public, never before has so much been known about DNA testing; however, there are many misconceptions too and the public does still does not know all the informationFor your benefit we recommend that you read the following five questions most commonly asked by those embarking on a DNA testing process.
1. Is This The Most Accurate Method of Determining Biological Relationships?A DNA Paternity test is the most accurate way of determining a biological relationship between an alleged father or mother and their child. In the past, blood grouping analysis served as a screening method, however the relevance and accuracy of this method has been greatly undermined by the use of DNA tests which, in the case of a paternity test, can provide 100% certainty of exclusion and 99.9%+ probability of inclusion.
2. What is The Difference Between an At-Home Paternity Test and a Legal Paternity Test? The difference between an At-Home Paternity Test (also called Curiosity Test or Peace of Mind Test) and a Legal Paternity Test is not in the result or way the DNA is analysed; the difference lies in how the sample is collected. For an At-Home Paternity test, one can simply order a sampling kit online, receive it by post at home and collect the samples yourself.
The kit will include oral swabs, which are used to take saliva and cheek cells, documentation for labelling and consent, and a set of instructions, terms and conditions. Once the samples are properly collected you send them to the lab for testing and await your results.
In a Legal DNA Paternity Test, the sample collection must follow a strict chain of custody procedure. All samples need to be collected and documented by an independent third party (a qualified GP or nurse is preferable) who will be responsible to verify and authenticate the samples. The actual result of the paternity in terms of the biological relationship will not differ but it is important that the identification of all samples is verified for the results to carry any legal weight.
3. How Do I Select The Best LaboratoryThe safest way to know that you are choosing the right Lab is by opting for a company that uses an ISO17025 and/or AABB accredited laboratory. This is the only way to ensure high quality, accurate results. Also, make sure that the results provide a full DNA profile for the 16 loci analysed, as well as the statistical probability of paternity. A simple Yes/No answer should not be deemed acceptable.
4. Can I Order a Paternity Test Without a Mother’s Sample? A mothers DNA is not necessary to perform a paternity test, however, when possible, it is recommended to include it. Only in very specific cases will the sample of the mother provide more accurate results such in the case of gene mutation. Many companies offer to test the mother at no extra charge. If you are based in UK you will, however need a recognised parents consent, so if you are excluding the mother, be sure to have the authority to sign the consent form.
5. Can DNA Be Obtained From Different Samples? It is possible to extract DNA from a number of sources such as hair, blood, semen and items such as used cigarette butts and tissues. The most common and best samples are the oral swabs mentioned above, however in cases where a person is not physically present, able or willing to donate a sample, then there are alternative solutions.
